In a documentary about the film Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox mentions a Woody Allen's joke about traveling in time “Don't go back before penicillin,” (later Woody put this phrase in the mouth of the starring character of his film Midnight in Paris.)
Practical solutions that in the long term end up in a hundred times bigger problem than the one they'd come to solve: human history. Penicillin is a good example.
What about the future? You don't need a time machine, just a ticket to fly to China for a dose of extreme pollution and overpopulation. By the way, the changes China has experienced lately well serves as an example: what the so-called “developed” countries have sold us as “progress” isn't exactly a good deal after all, right? Nevertheless, everyone seems determined to hold this fantasy come hell or high water.
Everyone is very afraid of death, very worried about how many years they will live. Medical care seems to be another major concern. But no one seems to realize the unhealthy, miserable conditions in which we live in present world. People barely admit something is wrong in our ways, but they don't seem to be willing to change or give up any of those habits (most of them vices) that have led to the circumstances in which we live today.
